Chronic fatigue syndrome (also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis) is a chronic disease, characterized by severe fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, sleep disruption, and other symptoms.

Research has not yet definitively shown what causes the condition, or whether or not one or multiple factors contribute to it.
