That meant getting in and out of the belt to change my music, which was a bit cumbersome. Over time, however, the fabric has stretched a little, and I no longer have that problem.

How We Found the Best Women’s Workout Apparel

To bring you the best workout apparel, I prioritized items that I have tested and loved, plus some that other Everyday Health writers have tested or are highly-rated and on my wishlist of products to try. Some of the items I tested over months, while others I could only test for weeks. Long-term testing included many repeated wears and washes — in those cases, the items that held up over time took priority.

Criteria that were important in all cases included fit, fabric, functionality, comfort, versatility, durability, longevity, and aesthetics. Items that helped me or other users perform their best, stay protected from the elements, and work out safely took the top spots. Brand reputation, including fabric purity and ethical considerations in manufacturing, was also a major factor.

What to Look for When Buying Workout Apparel

When choosing workout apparel, it’s important to think about how well the gear will support your body, movement, comfort, and performance during any activity you’re partaking in.

  • Fit: Tight-fitting garments offer compression and support, while looser fits offer freedom of movement.
  • Breathability: Materials that wick sweat and allow airflow help keep you cool and dry.
  • Durability: High-quality fabrics and stitching can withstand frequent washing and intense use.
  • Comfort: Soft seams, stretchable fabrics, and the right cut prevent chafing and distraction.
  • Support: Proper support can prevent strain or discomfort in items like sports bras and compression gear.
  • Flexibility: Clothes should allow a full range of motion, especially for dynamic movements.
  • Style: While not essential, feeling good in what you wear can boost your confidence and motivation.
  • Price: Balance cost with quality — sometimes investing in better gear pays off over the long term.

How Should a Sports Bra Fit?

Sports bras can go a long way toward reducing breast movement.

But the fit is key when making sure the bra works for you. When trying on sports bras, start with your usual size. The band should sit snugly around your rib cage, without riding up or causing discomfort. You should be able to fit two fingers between your body and the band.
“You definitely want support and potentially compression, but you also want a band that doesn’t compromise your breathing,” says Hislop. “I like the wider bands now and find they offer comfort without feeling like I can’t breathe.”

Your straps should be tight enough to minimize up and down movement, but you should also be able to fit two fingers under the straps.

Remember that your bra size can change over time, due to factors like weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging, so it’s advisable to measure yourself regularly to ensure the best fit.

How Should I Choose Workout Gear by Season?

Choosing workout gear by season is all about staying comfortable and safe in changing temperatures and weather conditions. But whether it’s chilly or warm out, avoid cotton and look for technical materials that wick away sweat and allow for ventilation, says Hislop.

In the summer, I look for moisture-wicking tops, shorts, and leggings made from synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon blends. I find that light colors that reflect the sun keep me cooler. Don’t forget UV protection and a breathable hat or sunglasses if you’re exercising outdoors.

In colder months, layering is key, says Hislop. Merino wool works well as a base layer, while high-waisted fleece-lined tights can help block out the cold. Keep your extremities protected with gloves and a hat.

Avoid cotton and opt for moisture-wicking fabrics such as nylon, elastane, spandex, and merino wool. If you’re spending a significant amount of time in the sun, consider buying clothes with SPF protection.
